Meet Amy Jane. An artist and professional piercer whose work straddles the line between the whimsical and the macabre. A regular at alternative markets like Satanic Flea Market, LDN Queer Mart, and Arty Farty, Amy Jane’s creations are an intricate blend of Gothic fairy tale aesthetics and nostalgic, soft-hearted sentimentality. Her practice draws heavily from childhood memories, found objects, and moments that remind us of life’s fragility, with the Sedlec Ossuary and a beloved lost teddy bear standing out as key sources of inspiration. Amy Jane’s art walks a fascinating tightrope between harsh beauty and comforting kitsch, giving new life to forgotten trinkets and assembling them into something wholly her own.
But Amy Jane's creativity doesn't stop at the craft table, her work as a piercer is equally thoughtful and expressive. Known for her delicate, bespoke ear curations, she approaches each client with care, curiosity, and a sharp eye for detail. Piercing, for Amy Jane, is not just about adornment; it’s a form of self-expression and self-care, often carrying deep emotional significance. Whether helping someone honour a loved one or simply feel more at home in their body, she creates space for healing and joy through her work.

You have showcased your artwork at numerous makers' markets, including Satanic Flea Market, LDN Queer Mart, and Arty Farty. Can you explain the influences of your art?
I am drawn to the macabre; I find it fascinating! I was lucky enough to visit the Sedlec Ossuary in Czechia last year, and it was surreal. Places that remind you of your own mortality are so inspiring. For me, it reminds me not to take life too seriously.
A lot of my work might be considered bricolage, as a lot of pieces are upcycled from charity shops, or I've been given bits and pieces from fellow crafters, and I've made do with what I have to create something new.
I draw great inspiration from my childhood teddy bear, Dancing Bear, whom I sadly lost during my time in San Diego. His friendship, comfort and company during my highs and lows throughout my entire life will always stay with me. I am a lover of trinkets and plushies and the joy they bring, this definitely influences the other half of my work.
I think my art showcases a contrast between soft and hard imagery. My love of the curation of beautiful things within a Gothic-inspired fairy tale setting is the dream.

You're also a Piercer. What inspires your approach to your unique, intricate ear curations, and how do you tailor them to individual clients?
I am such a magpie and love jewellery! The opportunity to wear more of it is just idyllic.
I look at an individual's anatomy, alongside their style, taste/preferences and budget, and we work together to create something bespoke and truly unique to them every time.
Piercings are a game of patience, and it's so nice to see people spending time on themselves - adornment is definitely a form of self-care.
Can you share a memorable experience or feedback from a client that reaffirmed your passion for piercing?
The clinic is a therapy room for some. I am always going to listen to you and hope I make you feel at ease enough to tell me about your day.
I pierced a Daith for Liv, a repeat client of mine, who told me about her Grandad. For his 90th birthday, they were going to get matching piercings. Sadly, before they got the chance to, he passed away. In piercing Liv on his birthday, we still honoured her side of their deal and used it as a memorial piece for him.
I remember feeling emotional about the process, and how much this can mean for some people to feel at home in their body and use it as a way to reclaim and even grieve in some scenarios.

For those considering their first piercing or expanding their collection, what advice would you offer to ensure they make informed and confident choices?
Research your piercer! Find a reputable studio that stocks verified high-quality jewellery, and someone with experience who is willing to answer all of your questions.
Never feel like you can't say no or to ask to move placements. An open discussion is important!
I aspire to be a better piercer every day.
And a question from my five-year-old boy: What's your favourite planet in the solar system?
Ooh, that's a tough one… I love Saturn’s rings - so complex and beautiful… and did you know it has 274 moons?!
